In a move that is meant to stifle and muzzle freedom of expression and access to information, yesterday two journalists from Zvishavane and Masvingo were with immediate effect barred from attending and reporting court issues.

Journalist from a Zvishavane based radio station Ya FM and Masvingo based paper TellZim are reported to have been chased away from court yesterday.

The reporters who were attending court sessions in Masvingo and Zvishavane as usual were dragged away by court security officials for no logical reason and were told never to step their foot again on the premises.

An impeccable source from Ya FM confirmed the incident.

“Yes it’s true our reporter was chased away yesterday morning. Also we got reports that the same thing happened in Masvingo,”

Justice Rita Makarau speaking to the press on the misnomer, she said “Journalist are free to cover court session, however they are not allowed to record court proceedings or interview anyone within the court premises.”

The issue has been received much criticism from the media fraternity who promised to stage demonstrations against the decision that ultra vires the right to access information.
