Residents in the St Marys suburb of Chitungwiza have expressed their disgust at Chitungwiza municipality non-collection of garbage and lack of response to sewer blockages.
The residents say the situation is so bad that human foetus are being discovered dumped at these dumps, a thing that has brought alarm to the community.
“We had a baby dumped close to the Huriyadzo Shopping Centre last week. Imagine, this is a busy shopping place were and such things are happening,” said Leonard Hombarume a resident of St Marys.
Another resident Spiwe Miti of Zengeza 5 says the problem of litter and sewer burst has been persistent in her area of Zengeza five and they fear children at risk as Chitungwiza Municipality continue to ignore dumps at most of the suburb street corners.
Recently residents ganged up with civic organisations and political party Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) to clean up the shopping places in Zengeza and St Mary’s.
Speaking to the residents TZ president Jacob Ngarivhume urged the residents to unity against diseases like typhoid and cholera. He said the epidemics doesn’t look at political affiliations but decimate everybody.
“The odds rest with us to safeguard our health and our families. They are communities, our nation and as such, they are our responsibility,” said Ngarivhume.
Transform Zimbabwe has embarked on a nationwide clean-up campaign “Stop Blaming #Start Acting” that will see them engaging communities in different towns to clean up their areas at the backdrop of fresh outbreaks of Typhoid in mostly urban areas of Zimbabwe.
A tour by ZimNews also revealed that council property and facilities such as public toilets and beer halls are run down some even closed down and are now sex havens as they are being used as brothels.
